Founded in 1975, Greensboro, North Carolina based John McCracken & Associates (JMA) has spent nearly 50 years providing quality appraisal and consultation services to an array of local, regional and national clients.
In its early years, JMA developed a strong practice, bringing on many talented appraisers, with a focus on a high -standard of appraising, and producing a top-tier appraisal product that became the desired standard of its clients and reviewers. JMA provided a wide range of appraisal services, including residential and commercial work for financial institutions, as well as eminent domain work for highway departments, utility providers and municipalities.
Over the years, JMA grew and evolved. A client first approach, a large professional staff of highly qualified MAI appraisers, a true market-based approach to value, and a stand-out, high quality product bolstered a growing reputation within the appraisal industry, one that gained recognition from major regional and national clients. Through referrals and a close affiliation with NCREIF, JMA moved into valuing investment-grade properties and holdings throughout the United States, for real estate syndication and then for pension fund groups, becoming a highly regarded national practice. JMA continued to maintain a thriving commercial and residential appraisal practice in the Triad, and even delved into residential home development through its McCracken Properties offshoot.
Eminent domain work had always been a part of JMA’s practice, but during the mid-1990s, a new focus on this segment evolved, when the firm was approached by a highway department needing a large, qualified firm that could appraise several large highway projects with tight schedules and a wide array of property types. With a dearth of firms capable of filling such needs, JMA quickly became the go to for major highway project appraisals. As a result, in 1997, the firm transitioned from an institutional and general purpose practice to one specializing in eminent domain appraisal and consulting services.
In the years since, JMA has worked with various highway departments, utility providers, municipalities, attorneys and consultants for their eminent domain acquisition needs. JMA’s appraisals continue to set the bar for industry excellence, with our staff, work product and valuations desired by clients and reviewers for their quality and ease of use in securing successful negotiations. Our work has been pivotal in the successful completion of hundreds of right of way projects and the expert witness testimony of our highly experienced, MAI-designated appraisal staff has helped secure numerous positive outcomes in trial.
