SUSAN M. KING MAI
After
earning a Bachelor of Business Administration degree at James Madison
University, Susan continued her education at
Virginia Commonwealth University, earning a Master of Science Degree in
Real Estate and Urban Land Development in December 1982. It was at VCU
that Susan began her appraisal career by taking several courses offered
by the Appraisal Institute. In early 1983, Susan moved from her home in northern Virginia to Chicago, Illinois to join New York Life
Insurance Company as an appraiser covering a 12-state territory. In
October 1984, Susan decided to move back closer to
home, and relocated to North Carolina where she joined John McCracken &
Associates, Inc. She earned the Appraisal Institute's MAI designation in
the Spring of 1987.
From the beginning, Susan's concentration has been commercially oriented, specializing in large institutional properties including, but not limited to, shopping centers, business parks, apartment complexes, subdivisions, office and industrial buildings, and vacant land across the United States. Clients at that time were primarily large life insurance companies, pension funds, syndicators, and private investors. Since the mid-1990s, Susan's concentration has been eminent domain appraisals for highway and public utility acquisitions.
Susan is also very active in the Appraisal Institute, serving on
various committees at the state-wide chapter level of the North Carolina
Appraisal Institute, serving over 650 members. Susan has held several
officer positions throughout the years, and is currently serving as the 2010
NCAI President. She also serves on the national level as a Regional Representative for Region V,
covering six states.
